In South-West Friesland you can enjoy a breath of fresh air along the IJsselmeer coast. You follow the line of the IJsselmeer coast to Stavoren. Stavoren is an old Hanseatic city that experienced its heyday in the thirteenth century. In the Middle Ages, Stavoren was a prosperous city where many ships docked to trade their goods. Now the atmospheric harbour town is mainly a tourist attraction. Where once trading ships from many directions moored in the harbour, you now mainly see pleasure yachts. The cast iron Stavoren Lighthouse is still in use. It has a height of almost sixteen metres. Molkwerum was an important fishing village in the 16th and 17th centuries, with a seaport in the Zuiderzee and even its own office in Amsterdam.
