The banks of the Lek around Culemborg

Culemborg and Vianen
The starting point of this route is in Culemborg. In the Middle Ages, this was a real trading village. That things were going well for Culemborg at the time is now reflected in the monuments. Part of Culemborg enjoys a protected cityscape due to all the historical buildings that can be found there. So definitely take some time to take a look in Culemborg. From here you cycle along the banks of the Lek to Vianen. The first settlement was already here around 3400 years ago, but that settlement was repeatedly plagued by floods. As a result, the residents moved to a new location. A permanent settlement was not established until around the year 1000. In Vianen you will find many special sights.

Historic towns along the Lek
The Lek originates from the river Nederrijn. Around the 10th century, the main flow of the Rhine's discharge water shifted from the Kromme Rijn to the Lek. The old Rhine course via the Kromme Rijn, among others, lost its function as an important waterway. There are no large cities on the Lek, but there are beautiful historical towns that are all worth visiting.
