The banks of the Lek around Culemborg

Culemborg and Vianen
The starting point of this route is in Culemborg. In the Middle Ages this was a real trading village. The fact that things were going well for Culemborg at the time is now reflected in the monuments. Part of Culemborg enjoys a protected cityscape because of all the historic buildings that can be found there. So be sure to take some time to take a look in Culemborg. From here you cycle along the banks of the Lek to Vianen. The first settlement was found here some 3,400 years ago, but that settlement was continually plagued by floods. As a result, the residents kept moving to a new place. A final settlement was only established around the year 1000. You will find many special sights in Vianen.

Historical places along the Lek
The Lek originates from the Lower Rhine river. Around the 10th century, the main flow of the drainage water of the Rhine moved from the Kromme Rijn to the Lek. The old Rhine course via, among other things, the Kromme Rijn lost its function as an important waterway. There are no large cities on the Lek, but there are beautiful historic places, all of which are worth a visit.
