Description
Zeeland is of course known for its coastlines and the sea, but you will also find beautiful areas inland. On this route you will get to know the peace and space of the Zeeland interior, full of agricultural areas with a small village here and there.
Heinkenszand and Lewedorp
The starting point of this route is in Lewedorp. From here you walk past fields and farms to Heinkenszand. This village originated in the 14th century when a sandbank was reclaimed. Around the 16th century there were two imposing ditches in Heinkenszand that increased the appearance of the village. Nowadays there is hardly anything left of those locks. From Heinkenszand you walk back to Lewedorp via the polders around the villages. Lewedorp is the youngest village in the municipality. Originally it consisted of a collection of houses, but more and more houses were added. Around 1929 it actually became a village.
Mill splendor in South Beverland
In Heinkenszand you will find two windmills that are worth seeing. The Vijf Gebroeders mill is located on the edge of the village. This corn mill was built in 1851 as a replacement for a mill that burned down after a lightning strike. The mill was restored in 2007 and has been running regularly ever since. In the middle of Heinkenszand you will also find Molen De Hoop from 1850. This is also a flour mill. Only the hull is left of this mill.
