Cycling along the peripheral lakes of Flevoland

The Eemmeer, the Nijkerkernauw and the Nuldernauw
On this route, you get on your bike at the edge of the Eemmeer. This lake, together with the southern bank of the Gooimeer, is a Natura 2000 area. The sheltered lakes with reeds along the shore are a true paradise for birds. Especially on the islands in the lakes you will find many birds such as water rails, reed warblers, seagulls and various types of ducks. Then you cycle along the narrow peripheral lakes the Nijkerkernauw and the Nuldernauw. From Zeewolde you cross to the other bank with a bicycle and pedestrian ferry. You then cycle to Huizen to cross over again via a bridge.

Hertog Reijnout steam pumping station
On the banks of the Nijkerkernauw you will find the Hertog Reijnout steam pumping station and the Arkemheen visitors centre. This steam pumping station was built in 1882 to drain an area of approximately 3000 hectares. The pumping station was in operation until 1983. After that, the work was taken over by an electric pumping station. Nowadays you can take a look at the pumping station and in the associated visitors centre you can learn more about the Arkemheen polder.
