Description
Near the Tjeukemeer you can enjoy cycling through a water-rich area. This route takes you from the shore of the Tjeukemeer to Heerenveen, the oldest peat canal village in the Netherlands.
From the Tjeukemeer to the Oranjewoud
The first part of the route runs a bit along the Tjeukemeer. This is the largest inland lake in all of Friesland. This lake has grown larger over the centuries due to storm surges and drifting ice. From the shore you can enjoy a wonderful view over the water. You then cycle through peat areas with a cozy Frisian town here and there. About half way along the route you will arrive in Heerenveen. Just outside this village is the Oranjewoud. This forest consists of former estates with green parks and a handful of country houses that have been preserved. You will be amazed by this impressive environment.

Heerenveen
When you think of Heerenveen you may quickly think of the Thialf skating rink, but there is more to see and do in this village. You can relax on a terrace or enjoy some shopping. Heerenveen developed in the 19th century when the middle class came to live there en masse. For a long time the village was characterized by the ribbon development, but now there is nothing left of it.
