Walking through historic Neer

From the village of Neer you can walk to the banks of the Maas in no time. Along the way you have a beautiful view over the water and the village of Beesel on the other side of the Maas. Through this beautiful stream valley landscape you can enjoy a wonderful walk in peace.

Guards at the city gate
This route takes you largely through Neer. This village used to be sandwiched between high moors, marshes and the Maas. In the Middle Ages, the village had a wall with gates, a Vrijthof and a Gasthuis, facilities that you would normally only find in a city. The gates were defended by civic guards. Some militias still exist today, a typical Limburg piece of history. You also just walk past Hanssum. The Maasfront Hanssum forms the connecting link between Beesel on the other side of the Maas and the stream valley landscape on the side of the Maas where you walk. A little further on you can walk a bit along the course of the Maas.

Café Maneslust Biej Mieke
The start and end point of the route is at Café Maneslust Biej Mieke. This is the ideal place to settle down on the terrace and enjoy a cup of coffee or lunch. Would you like to explore the area further by bike? Then try route 179619.

The Friedesse mill
On the edge of Neer you will find the Friedessemolen on the Neerbeek. This mill is still used to grind grain. Would you like to see how grain is ground between grinding stones, powered by water power? Then take a look at the mill on Sunday afternoons between May and October. The exact age of the mill is unknown, but it is already written about in a document from 1343.
