Tour of Holtingerveld, Vledder, Frederiksoord and Wilhelminaoord

Your route starts on the edge of Steenwijk. Stop off at Residence De Eese for a cup of coffee! Today you will take a nice varied bike ride along the Holtingerveld, Vledder, Frederiksoord and Wilhelminaoord. First you drive through the Holtingerveld. You will find dry heath and oak birch forests. From the heath you have a beautiful view of the nearby Havelterberg, a small hill where two dolmens (D53 and D54) are located. The heath is grazed by a flock of Drenthe Heath sheep, the oldest sheep breed in Western Europe. Then you drive via Vledder to Frederiksoord and Wilhelminaoord: two villages that arose from mining colonies that were founded around 1820 by the Society of Benevolence. Be sure to stop here to soak up the atmosphere: the Colonies of Benevolence have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
