Steenwijkerland, Overijssel, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 4012824
Provided by: Groots Genieten
Your route starts on the outskirts of Steenwijk. Today you'll enjoy a wonderfully varied bike ride along the Holtingerveld, Vledder, Frederiksoord, and Wilhelminaoord. First, you'll cycle through the Holtingerveld, where you'll find dry heathland and oak-birch forests. From the heathland, you'll have a beautiful view of the nearby Havelterberg, a small hill where two dolmens (D53 and D54) lie. The heathland is grazed by a herd of Drenthe Heath sheep, the oldest sheep breed in Western Europe. Then, you'll cycle via Vledder to Frederiksoord and Wilhelminaoord: two villages that emerged from reclamation colonies established around 1820 by the Society of Benevolence. Be sure to stop here to soak up the atmosphere: the Colonies of Benevolence have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
