Tour of Tjeukemeer and Joure

Your route starts at Parkhotel Tjaarda, where you first enjoy a cup of coffee at Grand Café 1834. Today you take a nice tour around the Tjeukemeer, and cycle back via Joure. From the Echten Gemaal on the south bank of the Tjeukemeer you have a beautiful view of the entire Tjeukemeer. The pumping station was built in 1913 to drain the large Veenpolder of Echten. At the pumping station is the statue of the women Tsjûke and March. According to tradition, the Tjeukemeer (Tsjûkemar in Frisian) owes its name to them. Joure is known as the Frisian town where Egbert Douwes started a shop selling colonial goods such as coffee in 1753. A nice place, definitely stop here!
