A tour around the Tjeukemeer

This route takes you on a circuit around the Tjeukemeer. This is the largest inland lake in all of Friesland. Over the centuries, this lake grew larger due to drifting ice and storm surges. This is a real water sports area, but you can also enjoy cycling along the lake.

The Frisian Tsjûkemar
The starting point of this cycle route is in the Brekenpolder. From here you cycle to the town of Eesterga. There used to be a church in this village, but it was demolished in 1740. You will still find a bell tower from 1617. Then you head towards the Tjeukemeer, or as the Frisians say 'Het Tsjûkemar'. Over the years, the shape of the lake and its surface have changed considerably. The lake is often used by water sports enthusiasts. There are several towns around the lake that you will cycle through during this cycle tour, such as Sint Nicolaasga and Scharsterbrug.

The Skarrenmoune
On the edge of the village of Scharsterbrug you cycle past the Skarrenmoune mill. This polder mill was probably built in 1888, but the date of construction is not certain. The polder mill has drained the nearby polder for years and also milled grain. You can visit the mill when the sails are turning, but you can also make an appointment to admire the mill from the inside.
