Description
This walk takes you along the banks of the Tjeukemeer. You also walk through the vast Frisian peat landscape.
Tjeukemeer
You cross the Pier Christiaansloot, a canal that separates the villages of Delfstrahuizen and Echtenerbrug. A little later you walk along the banks of the Tjeukemeer, the largest inland lake in Friesland. It is wonderfully quiet here, so you can fully enjoy the beautiful views over the water.
Gemaal van Echten
The former Echten Gemaal, a monument from 1913, is located on the water. The statue of the women Tsjûke and March stands near the pumping station. According to tradition, the Tjeukemeer (Tsjûkemar in Frisian) owes its name to them. In Oosterzee you can see the chimney of the former dairy factory from 1891 from a distance. You walk into the countryside via the Gieterse Vaart, a former peat canal. You can enjoy the rural silence for many kilometers here!
