This walk takes you along the banks of the Tjeukemeer. You also walk through the wide Frisian peat landscape.
Tjeukemeer
You cross the Pier Christiaansloot, a canal that separates the villages of Delfstrahuizen and Echtenerbrug. A little later you walk along the banks of the Tjeukemeer, the largest inland lake in Friesland. It is wonderfully quiet here, so that you can fully enjoy the beautiful views over the water.
pumping station of Echten
At the water is the former pumping station of Echten, a monument from 1913. The statue of the women Tsjûke and March stands next to the pumping station. According to tradition, the Tjeukemeer (Tsjûkemar in Frisian) owes its name to them. In Oosterzee you can see the chimney of the former dairy from 1891 from a distance. You walk into the countryside via the Gieterse Vaart, a former peat canal. You can enjoy the rural silence here for many kilometers!
