Cycle route Nistelrode along grazers and grasslands | Food

125,000 years ago, the river Maas flowed through the Maashorst, the largest nature reserve in Brabant. The area is characterized by dark coniferous forests, colorful heathlands, open spaces, marshy pools and fens, and tall trees. You can enjoy walking and cycling from the Slabroek Visitor Center, and perhaps you will spot one of the large grazers, such as the Wisent, Tauros or Exmoor pony.

In the previous century, Maashorst was known for its cherry cultivation around Uden. However, these high-stem orchards disappeared at the end of the seventies. Nowadays, Maashorst farmers grow low-stem trees for new high-yielding cherry varieties and the Uden sweet cherry is once again in full bloom in Maashorst! In addition to the Uden sweet cherry, there are other special cherry varieties to be found, including the Hedelfinger cherry, the Inspecteur Lohnis, the Early Rivers cherry, the Mierlose Black cherry and the Varikse Black cherry.
