125,000 years ago, the river Maas flowed through the Maashorst, the largest nature reserve in Brabant. The area is characterized by dark coniferous forests, colorful heaths, clearings, marshy pools and fens, and tall trees. You can enjoy walking and cycling from the Visitor Center Slabroek, and you might spot one of the large grazers, such as the Wisent, Tauros or Exmoorpony.

In the last century, Maashorst was known for its cherry cultivation around Uden. At the end of the 1970s, however, these standard orchards disappeared. Nowadays, Maashorst farmers grow low-standard trees for new high-yielding cherry varieties and the Udense sweet cherry is blooming again in Maashorst! In addition to the Uden sweet cherry, there are other special cherry varieties, including the Hedelfinger cherry, the Inspector Lohnis, the Early Rivers cherry, the Mierlose Black cherry and the Varikse Black cherry.
