Oosterhout, North Brabant, The Netherlands

The Baronie has to offer the best of both worlds: an urban ambiance and extensive nature. The area was shaped by horticulture and (food) industry, which were of great importance for the development of both the city and the country. Thanks to the sugar factories, Oosterhout grew from a fairly poor provincial town into a lively center with major manufacturers such as Jamin (candy and ice cream) and Schriek (gingerbread).
Breda, which was already known for its vegetable gardens and orchards in the Middle Ages, became an important center for horticulture. From here strawberries were transported to London. The fruit processing industry, such as Jamfabriek Princenhage and Hero, where fruit was processed into jam and soft drinks, also established itself in Breda. During a visit to the center of the Brabant sugar industry, traces of the past are still visible. Here you will be introduced to sweet specialties and other characteristic products from the Baronie.
