Description

Hoek van Holland is known for its beautiful waters and nature and dune areas. It originated as a sandbank in the mouth of the Meuse, which became increasingly silted up after the Sint-Elisabeth flood of 1421. The development of the city as a seaside resort started after the First World War and you can now enjoy many beautiful nature reserves along the coast. You will also cycle through the Staelduinse Bos, a nature reserve with stately avenues and old deciduous trees that was set up as an estate in the nineteenth century. Maassluis and Vlaardingen are nice places to get off. You cycle back along the Nieuwe Waterweg, from 1872.
