Along and on the Waaldijk near Zaltbommel

It is a tough walk from Zaltbommel to Zullichem, but those who persevere will be rewarded with a great trip that will give you a lot of satisfaction. Zaltbommel is a fortified town of more than a thousand years old, located on the Waal and named after the influence of salt water on the land. Zaltbommel means "salty orchard" and was originally called Bommel. The city is still called that by its own residents. The first mention of Zaltbommel goes back to the year 850. In the course of the thirteenth century, "Bomela", as Zaltbommel was called in the past, grew into an important trading city. In the fifteenth century the city joined the Hanseatic League. You walk on the Waaldijk, with a great view over the water. When you arrive in Zuillichem, you can visit the De Hoop mill. The grist mill was built in 1863. The current mill is the third mill on this site and is painted white. The bottom two floors of the tower mill are inhabited. The mill generally operates on Saturdays and can be visited then. Grain is ground at the mill on a voluntary basis.
