Cycling around the Beulakerwijde

The Weerribben-Wieden National Park is a beautiful water-rich nature reserve. You cycle through vast peat areas and past dense swamp forests. In this quiet area, the sound of birds flying around is often the only thing you hear. In short, a wonderful place to relax.

The Beulakerwijde
This route takes you in a large circuit along the Beulakerwijde lake. This is the largest lake in the Kop van Overijssel. In 2006, all kinds of work was started to make the area suitable as a recreational area. This created a large nature reserve with different parts separated by so-called ribs. You will also find these ribs in the rest of the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. These were previously used to dry peat. In this way, the new nature reserve fits perfectly between the older nature reserves. You will find marinas on the edge of the lake and the lake is also used by windsurfers and other water sports enthusiasts. While cycling, look out over the water and admire the tricks of the water sports enthusiasts on the water.

Bird watching in the Wieden
De Wieden is a lake and swamp area that is known as a habitat for all kinds of birds. Special birds in this area are mainly the large bird species that eat fish, such as the cormorant and the curlew. Both species occur here in large numbers. You will also find birds here such as the bittern, the purple heron, the black tern and the rare short-eared owl.
