The beautiful surroundings of Woudenberg

According to many, Woudenberg is located in the middle of the Netherlands. In any case, the area lends itself to beautiful varied cycling tours. This route takes you through the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park and the Gelderse valley. You also cycle along the former Grebbelinie.

Utrecht Hill Ridge
In the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park you cycle through a slightly rolling landscape of heathlands and old deciduous and coniferous forests. It is wonderful to relax in this area and leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life behind you. At junction 2 you can take a detour by cycling a little to the right onto the Zeisterweg. You will then arrive at the Pyramid of Austerlitz: from the top you have a beautiful view.

Gelderse Valley
In the Gelderse Vallei you will not find dense forests, but a lowland with meadows and beautiful views. Just like on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug you will also see beautiful old buildings here. Like in Scherpenzeel, an old village that once lay at a strategic point on the border of Gelre and Het Sticht (Utrecht). Here you will see, among other things, the monumental Reformed Church from 1300.

Grebbe Line
Just below Leusden you cycle a bit along the beautiful Valleikanaal, a watercourse that formed an important part of the Grebbelinie. In the landscape you can still see a few casemates that serve as silent witnesses to the battle that took place here during the Second World War. At the Langesteeg one of these casemates has been set up as a new information point about the Grebbelinie. The Grebbelinie was given the status of national monument in 2011 because it forms a unique example of defensive works.
