Description
This route takes you for a day to one of the treasure troves of the Netherlands: the Kop van Overijssel. You will find an unprecedented wealth of nature and cultural history here, because you cycle through Giethoorn and the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. A day full of experiences.
Kuinderbos
The Weerribben-Wieden is one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Netherlands. And one of the quietest. In this swampy swamp area you drive past endless reed fields, swamp forests and watercourses. However pristine this area may look, it has been shaped by peat extraction over the centuries. You also take a trip to the salty Kuinderbos in the Noordoostpolder. Shell remains can still be found in the ground between the trees.
Romantic foot ferry
Giethoorn actually needs no introduction: you will be amazed by the Venice of the North. On the Hoogeweg in the Weerribben you will see several nineteenth-century authentic farm workers' houses. To get to Dwarsgracht, cross the Walengracht with a foot ferry. In high season the crossing costs €1.10.
