Montferland, Gelderland, The Netherlands
Hiking route: 394777
Provided by: Groots Genieten
You almost imagine yourself abroad with this walking route, given the rolling landscape and the beautiful viewpoints. Although the route is close to the border with Germany, Montferland, as this region is called, is still really the Netherlands. Montferland is located on a moraine that reaches heights of 91 metres.
The Bergherbos consists of coniferous forest and mixed forest; here and there the original oak-beech forest can still be found. Mammals such as badger, deer, stone marten and bats live in the forest area. In the Middle Ages, iron was extracted from rock in the Bergherbos. These were found at not too great a depth in the soil.
Where the boulders were excavated, typical elongated pits now remain: the iron pits. Enjoy the views you have from the hilltops, for example on the nearby's Heerenberg. Here and there you will feel the hilly terrain quite in your legs.
