Cycling through nature on Schouwen-Duiveland

From Het Wapen van Zeeland you can take a bike ride through the varied nature of Schouwen-Duiveland. First you cycle through the dunes on the north side of the island. Take a deep breath and enjoy the fresh sea air. Just before Burgh-Haamstede you pass through the deciduous forest behind Slot Haamstede. Further on you drive through Boswachterij Westerschouwen, the largest forest in Zeeland. Originally this was one large sloping shifting sand plain, now pines, oaks, birches and poplars grow there. From junction 70 you exchange the green for the wide blue of Oosterschelde National Park. Along the path is the Plompetoren, an old church tower from 1486. From the top you have a beautiful panorama. Further on you cycle past the Schelphoek nature reserve, after which you ride through the polder back to Renesse.
