Leeuwarden, Friesland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 391063
Provided by: Groots Genieten
In the north of Friesland you drive through the characteristic Frisian polder land. You will also pass through beautiful old villages.
Picturesque Birdard
The route starts in Stiens. Here you can admire, among other things, the twelfth-century St. Vitus Church. There is also a beautiful church in neighboring Britsum: the Johanneskerk from the thirteenth century. On low-traffic roads you drive past wide grasslands and along ditches and canals. Time seems to have stood still in picturesque Birdaard, what a nice atmosphere! In the countryside you pass the Genezareth, a thatched polder mill from 1850.
Sint-Anna Parish
Oude Bildtzijl enjoys a protected village view. You can see the Julianakerk and several monumental farms here. Nij Altoenae refers to Sint-Annaparochie, which was originally called Altoenae, because the people who embanked the Bildt in 1505 came from the Land van Heusden and Altena. In Sint-Annaparochie you will pass the octagonal Van Harenskerk from 1683.
