Cycling from Appingedam to Loppersum

The flat landscape of Northeast Groningen seems to be specially made for beautiful bike rides. You have endless views that are only occasionally interrupted by historical towns. You simply have to go cycling there!

Appingedam
The starting point of this route starts at the parking lot at Blokstad, a little outside Appingedam. Here you can park your car and get on your bike. From here you are in Appingedam in no time. In this historic town you can take nice boat trips, but you can also admire the medieval architecture in this town by bike. A real feast for the eyes. From here the route takes you to Loppersum.

Maritime Delfzijl
Then it is time to set course for Delfzijl. You will cycle a bit along the coast of the Wadden Sea. Here you can enjoy a breath of fresh air before cycling back into civilization. In Delfzijl you can visit the harbour. The city has grown into an important industrial port in recent decades, so there is plenty to do in the harbour.

Mills in Northeast Groningen
Lovers of mills are not forgotten on this route. On the edge of Appingedam you cycle past the mill body De Eendragt. This mill was built in 1802, but today only the remains of the mill can be seen. Before you cycle into Loppersum you pass another mill: the Stormvogel. This corn and hulling mill was built in 1849. The mill has been restored twice and due to this good maintenance the mill can still turn.
