Description

The old Bernisse river was a busy trade route from the 12th century. Due to the toll revenues, the towns of Heenvliet and Geervliet were prosperous ports in the Middle Ages. You will recognize this prosperity in the beautiful historic centres. One of the important remaining buildings from the Middle Ages is the Ravensteyn Ruins in Heenvliet. The other centers have a more rural character, with a varied open polder landscape. Nowadays, the remains of the former important trade route De Bernisse form a 7 km long recreational area, with lakes, bowls and ponds. Together with the banks of forests, marshy nature reserves and meadows, the area forms the connecting link between east and west Voorne-Putten and a good base for a walking or cycling tour.

Ravensteyn ruins
The Ravesteyn ruin is one of the very few buildings from the Middle Ages in an unchanged state. The former castle must have been built around the middle of the thirteenth century and was part of a series of defense works on the island of Voorne.

Mills on the island of Putten
The island of Putten has many mills, some of which are capable of grinding. For example, you will pass Molen de Arend in Zuidland. This mill functions as a flour mill. In Spijkenisse you will find Molen Nooit Gedacht. A pancake restaurant has been built next to this mill, where pancakes are baked with flour from the mill.

Spijkernis
The naming of this town on the island of Putten comes from the words spieke (spire) and nesse (nose) as an indication of a projecting piece of land in the river. Nowadays often referred to as'Spike City\\\'.
