Description

The Grôte Daikboekel is the longest distance that runs along the entire Omringdijk. In some places the dike protrudes five to six meters above the landscape. The meanders in the dike were caused by breaches. The swirling water at the breakthrough created deep wheels, around which the dike was built in later years. During the bike ride you have a beautiful view of the West Frisian landscape. You pass mills, defenses and historic buildings. There are starting and aid stations at various locations along the route, such as Alkmaar, Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Medemblik and Schagen, where visitors can enjoy a break and learn more about the history of the dike. A unique opportunity to learn more about the history of the dike and the West Frisian landscape.
