Description

Since 2021, four Colonies of Benevolence have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Two of these are Frederiksoord and Wilhelminaoord. Time to explore these villages by bike. But first you drive to Vledder. Here you pass the John the Baptist Church and the old Brink. Then you drive to Frederiksoord: the first village that emerged from the mining colonies that were founded around 1820 by the Society of Benevolence. There are still a few colony houses from that time along the road. You can learn more about this period in Museum De Proefcolony. Via Wilhelminaoord you drive to the centuries-old De Eese Estate. Here you will find a backdrop of forests, small-scale agricultural lands and monumental farms. On Koningin Wilhelminalaan you will again see some houses from the colony period. The route ends at Camping Padjelanta.
