Enschede, Overijssel, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 3896373
Provided by: Groots Genieten
This route takes you through the Aamsveen, a cross-border nature reserve that is largely located on German territory. The Aamsveen was once part of a raised bog area that covered part of the eastern Netherlands and extended into Germany. Most of this raised bog was reclaimed for agriculture. The Aamsveen is one of the few remnants of this old raised bog. You cycle through a mix of swamp forest, heathlands, lakes and poor grassland. In between, you make a trip to the rural area near the German Epe, but you soon cycle back into nature. In this region, it is wonderfully quiet on the cycle paths, ideal for a day of downsizing. Back in the Netherlands, you can visit the shop of Zuivelboerderij Holterhof.
