Description
Cycling 48 kilometers around Ypres. This means that you end up in the setting of the First World War. There are numerous memorial sites throughout the landscape: cemeteries, monuments and still visible traces in the area.
You start on the Grote Markt in Ypres and after a few minutes of pedaling you will pass the first war site along the Ieperlee Canal: Essex Farm Cemetery. The bunker complex and cemetery where John McCrae wrote the poem"In Flanders Fields\\\". Further on your tour you cycle through the northern Ypres Salient and pass the largest French cemetery, St. Charles de Potyse, where approximately 4,800 soldiers are buried.
Then it goes towards Bellewaerde Ridge, a gentle slope in the landscape where you will still find an authentic landscape of the First World War in the Kraterbos. The bomb craters are still clearly recognizable!
You will also cycle through the traces of the war further along your route: Hill 60 and 62, the German trenches of Bayernwald are also worth a visit.
Your cycle tour ends between the Flemish fields and via the 17th century fortifications you take a detour around Ypres and then end at the Menin Gate. Here a salute is given every day at 8 p.m. to all those who died in the First World War. A ceremony that grabs you by the throat.
