Valkenburg, Limburg, The Netherlands
Hiking route: 3888511
Provided by: Bas, Limburg
This Chalk walking route takes you to the most beautiful (unknown) places in Valkenburg.
During this walking route you will discover the calcareous and green environment in the outskirts of Valkenburg. The medieval tradition of underground marl mining resulted in above-ground monuments. Houses at that time were made of mud and wood. For a structure such as a church or a castle, people even went underground here in Valkenburg. There, the golden yellow marl blocks were broken loose to build the castles of Valkenburg, Schaloen and Genhoes and the imposing Sint-Mauritius Church. They are located in the hilly landscape of the Geuldal, which provides breathtaking views during your walk. The route partly follows the Geul, which you leave to discover the wonders of the Schaelsberg and the fairytale paths of Sint-Jansbosch.
