Walking along the Dinkel near Denekamp

Just above Denekamp you take a walk through nature. The route is partly on unpaved paths, so wear sturdy shoes. First you walk on a leafy road to the Canal Almelo-Nordhorn that was put into use in 1886. Until 1960, the canal was used sporadically for peat shipping, after which it developed into an elongated nature reserve. At junction L19 you take the path along the Dinkel, a river that originates in Germany. It is wonderfully quiet to walk along the rippling water, ideal for a relaxing day. The last part of the route you walk at your leisure along meadows and farms. The route ends at the Zusters van Denekamp Franciscushuis guest house, a monastery whose origins date back to 1875.
