Description

Your route starts at Camping Waalstrand. You can stroll through the floodplains here, you might come across Konik horses and Red Beggars. You also walk past the medieval castle of Doornenburg, which is more than worth a visit. It is one of the best examples of late medieval fortification in the Netherlands. It has the largest outer bailey in the Netherlands and the farm within the walls is also unique for our country. You will also find listening point L43: Devastation and sadness, walk here to learn more about the wartime. After the failed Battle of Arnhem, the Over-Betuwe became the front area. The German commander Harmel made his headquarters here, in the medieval castle. German destruction and Allied bombing left almost no building in Doornenburg undamaged.
