Walk Rottige Meenthe

With this route you will discover the Rottige Meente, a special nature reserve in Friesland. Until about a century ago peat was still being cut here - in inhumane conditions. The peat cutters left behind a beautiful landscape. Here you can enjoy a mosaic of water and land, reeds and quaking bogs, flowering grasslands and peat holes. And not to forget an unprecedented silence by Dutch standards. With a bit of luck you will see one of the otters that have come swimming from the nearby Weerribben. In between you will walk along the edge of Munnekeburen. In this village you can take a look at the Reformed Church from 1806. Further on you will pass the Rietvink and Reiger, two nineteenth-century polder mills. The route ends with a delicious meal at Paviljoen Driewegsluis.
