Walk Rottige Meenthe

With this route you will discover the Rottige Meente, a special nature reserve in Friesland. Until about a century ago, peat was still cut here - in degrading conditions. As a result, the peat cutters left behind a beautiful landscape. Here you can enjoy a mosaic of water and land, reeds and quaking bogs, flowering grasslands and peat holes. Not to mention an unprecedented silence by Dutch standards. With a bit of luck you will see one of the otters that have come swimming in from the nearby Weerribben. In between you walk along the edge of Munnekeburen. In this village you can take a look at the Reformed Church from 1806. Further on you will pass the Rietvink and Reiger, two nineteenth-century polder windmills. The route ends with a delicious meal at Paviljoen Driewegsluis.
