Walking through Nijverdal and the forests

From Nijverdal you can walk straight into the forest on the Nijverdalse Berg. You walk along winding paths between a mix of coniferous and deciduous trees. It is wonderfully quiet here, ideal for a day of relaxation. In the middle of the forest you will pass the former Camp Twilhaar. During the Second World War, unemployed and Jewish men were put to work here. Families who had been driven from their homes on the coast because the Germans were building the Atlantic Wall there were also housed here. You walk under the railway via a tunnel. You will end up on the Goudzoekerspad: a reference to the gold rush that broke out here in 1901. It soon became apparent that gold mining in the Nijverdalse Berg was not profitable and the investors gave up. The route ends at Grand Café Toi Toi.
