Walking through Nijverdal and the woods

From Nijverdal you can walk straight into the forest on the Nijverdalse Berg. You walk along winding paths between a mix of coniferous and deciduous trees. It is wonderfully quiet here, ideal for a day of relaxation. In the middle of the forest you pass the former Camp Twilhaar. Unemployed and Jewish men were employed here during the Second World War. Families who had been driven from their homes on the coast were also housed there because the Germans were building the Atlantic Wall there. You walk under the railway via a tunnel. Here you arrive at the Goudzoekerspad: a reference to the gold rush that broke out here in 1901. Gold mining in the Nijverdalse Berg soon turned out to be unprofitable and investors gave up. The route ends at Grand Café Toi Toi.
