Tour of Twente Fens

Twente is best known for its charming coulisse landscape. With this route you will discover the 'other Twente': that of the vast peat bogs. The landscape here is characterised by straight parcelling patterns and vast meadows. You cycle a short distance along the Geesters Stroomkanaal, which plays an important role in regional water management. From junction 7 you cycle along the Engbertsdijksvenen, a vast peat area with heathland, forests and fens. It is a remnant of the large peat bog that once covered the north-east of the Netherlands. You can get off here and walk a short distance into the nature reserve via a boardwalk. In Sibculo you will pass the site of the former medieval Cistercian monastery Groot Galilea. Via Kloosterhaar and Langeveen you cycle to Geesteren. The route ends at B&B Sagenland/De Huiskamer van Sagenland.
