Cycling route: 3864311
Provided by: route.nl
You cycle to the Holtingerveld forests. Here and there, craters in the ground bear witness to a bombing raid on a German airfield located here during World War II. Hence the incredibly straight road just above Havelte! A little later, you'll feel far from civilization in Dwingelderveld National Park. This is the largest marshy heathland in Western Europe. You can enjoy beautiful cycling past rolling heathland, drifting sands, forests, and dozens of ponds and small pools. Rainwater doesn't seep into the ground here due to an impermeable layer beneath the surface. This is how more than sixty fens and heathland pools were created throughout the area. In summer, bell heather and heather bloom beautifully pink and purple. The route starts and ends at the Welgelegen Estate, the perfect location.
