Description
This cycling route runs through Oud-Beijerland, Nieuw-Beijerland and Zuid-Beijerland. You will pass many beautiful dikes, fields and creeks. Take the ferry in Zuid-Beijerland to get to Tiengemeten.
The area where Oud-Beijerland is now located became habitable in 1557. The Count Lamoraal van Egmond obtained the rights for this area and founded the village of Beijerland in 1559. The village is named after the count's wife, Sabina of Bavaria. Because a village with almost the same name was founded in the new polder, Nieuw-Beijerland, Beijerland was given the name Oud-Beijerland. Later, another village was founded in the south of the Hoeksche Waard called Zuid-Beijerland.
Tip: after 20 km from Oud-Beijerland you arrive at the ferry for the crossing to the nature island of Tiengemeten, which is managed by Natuurmonumenten.
In 2006, Tiengemeten was transformed from agricultural land to nature. A hole has been dug in the dike on the south side; a large part of the island is now under the influence of the river on a daily basis. Further on, the water stands still and a vast swamp is created. Natuurmonumenten is restoring the old cultural landscape in the oldest polder on the island. In addition to nature, you will also find several museums on Tiengemeten. For the children,'Play Nature\\\' is a must!
