Cycling through the peat area near Emmen

Northeast of Emmen, you'll cycle through the former peatlands. A region brimming with cultural history. And quiet cycle paths! You'll cycle through the forest to Valthe, a characteristic village green. Then the landscape changes: the forests give way to expansive meadows. Nieuw-Weerdinge is the first former peat colony on your route. Further on, you'll briefly cycle through Emmer-Compascuum, a name meaning "the common pasture of Emmen." Along the canal are Grenszicht, a corn mill dating from 1907, and the Sint-Willehadus Church from 1924. After cycling close to the German border, the route turns towards Emmen. You'll cycle along the edge of the Oosterbos forest and also through the Emmerdennen. In the village of Weerdinge, you'll see the Hondsrug, a corn mill dating from 1910. The route concludes with a meal at Buffetrestaurant Thijs en Aafke.
