Cycling through the peat area near Emmen

Northeast of Emmen you drive through the former peat area. A region full of cultural history. And quiet cycle paths! You cycle through the forest to Valthe, a characteristic green village. Then the landscape changes: the forests make way for vast meadows. Nieuw-Weerdinge is the first former peat colony on your route. Further on you drive through Emmer-Compascuum, a name that means 'the communal meadow of Emmen'. Along the canal are Grenszicht, a flour mill from 1907, and the Sint-Willehadus Church from 1924. After cycling near the border with Germany, the route turns towards Emmen. You drive along the edge of the Oosterbos, you also pass through the Emmerdennen. In Esdorp Weerdinge you will see the Hondsrug, a flour mill from 1910. The route ends with a meal at Buffet Restaurant Thijs en Aafke.
