At 63.45 meters, Lange Jaap was the tallest lighthouse in the Netherlands for a long time. Today, the lighthouse on the Maasvlakte is the tallest lighthouse. The construction of the Lange Jaap lighthouse started in 1877 and the lighthouse was finished a year later. The tower is made entirely of cast iron plates. Before the Lange Jaap lighthouse was built here, skippers were guided in the right direction with fires based on wood or coal.
