Cross-border nature around Venlo

Nature reserves and an old air base
The starting point of this route is in the Venloër Heide. This area mainly consists of forests with both deciduous and coniferous trees, but you also cycle past small heathlands. This nature reserve contains the remains of the Venlo-Herongen air base. This air base was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War. From the Venloër Heide you cycle through various nature reserves. Along the way you cycle through the German town of Auwel-Holt. Krickenbecker Seen nature reserve is the last area you cycle through before you end up back on the Venloër Heide.

Restaurant Birkenhof
Restaurant Birkenhof is the end point of this route. Here you can treat yourself to a delicious meal or order one of the many locally brewed beers available here. If the weather is nice, you can sit on the terrace with a cup of coffee and enjoy the sun. When it is very hot, the trees surrounding the restaurant provide sufficient shade. The menu consists of substantial meals, mainly with a lot of meat.

The Arenborg
At the start of the route you cycle past the Arenborg, a monumental mansion castle from the 17th century. The castle was probably built on behalf of mayor Arnold Bloemarts who lived here for a long time. The south and east wings of the castle date from the 17th century. The rest of the castle is slightly less old. Today there is a plastic surgery clinic in the complex.
