There are eleven cities in Friesland and this route introduces you to two of those cities. During this walking tour you walk from Sneek to Bolsward, two beautiful cities, each with their own atmosphere and characteristics.
Culture in Sneek and Bolsward
The Watertoren in Sneek is well known, but you will find even more special things in Sneek. Did you know, for example, that drabbelkoeken and Weduwe Joustra, the delicious Beerenburg come from Sneek? Or did you know that beer is brewed in Bolsward and that Gysbert Japix comes from here? A walk is a great way to discover everything. Walk the curly roads between the two cities and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Shirts in the landscape
In the 10th century, the reclamation of the high moors south and east of the clay area of the Zuidwesthoek started. This entailed hydraulic problems for the clay areas. That is why the first dikes were built in that same century and the first'mother polders\\\' arose. Inland polders or hems were formed to protect the land south of the Marnedijken against the water from the peat bogs. The Hemdijk became an important inner dike. You walk on these dikes and pass several old villages on this route.
Historic IJst
Along the way you will pass through the town of IJlst. This town has city rights since 1268. The city used to be known for shipbuilding and the good trading position on the river Ee. Only parts of the Ee are now left. On the canal in IJlst you will find historic houses with gardens adjacent to the water, so-called'bleken\\\' or'overtuinen\\\'. Some of these gardens are still privately owned. A special sight to see.
You can return to Sneek with the Arriva train.
