Berkelland is characterized by the river Berkel that flows right through the landscape here. You will find green areas on the banks of the river. This route takes you along the Berkel and further you walk a bit across the border of Twente and Germany.
Walking along the Berkel
The first part of the route runs along the Berkel. This river has been canalized on a large scale and the banks of the river have been mowed for a long time. In recent years, attempts have been made to give the river a little more space and nature on the banks has been given free rein again. In this way, the river is restored to its former glory and that has a positive effect on the flora and fauna in and around the river. A little further on you walk exactly on the border of Twente with Germany. Standing with one foot in the Netherlands and one foot in Germany, it's possible.
Krosewicker Grenzwald
The Krosewicker Grenzwald, a nature reserve of about 7 hectares, is located between the Dutch Rekken and the German Vreden. In the middle of the area is a wet heathland and a fen with special flora and fauna. You will also find rare nutrient-poor and stagnant waters here. You will hardly find such waters anywhere in Germany.
