In Groningen you will find all kinds of special areas and the Lauwersmeer National Park is certainly one of them. This route takes you along the edge of this beautiful nature reserve and through the surrounding country with picturesque Groningen villages. Groningen at its best!
Lauwersmeer National Park
The start and end point of this route is at a parking lot on the edge of the Lauwersmeer National Park. Park your car here and then quickly hop on your bike. On the first part of the tour you explore the edge of the national park. The Lauwersmeer in this area was created when the Lauwerszee was closed off from the Wadden Sea with a dam. Now you can enjoy great views, an enormous amount of birds and special flowers here.
Mill Rust Rust
In Munnekezijl you cycle past the Rust Roest mill. This mill was built in 1856 to grind rye. In 1930 the mill was hit by a tornado, causing extensive damage to the rods. The mill was repaired in 1931 and subsequently remained in operation until after the Second World War. In 1970 the mill was restored under the supervision of the Kollumerland Monument Foundation and has been well maintained since then. The mill still runs regularly.
