Background The Raamdal is located south of the town of Escharen (near Grave) on the west bank of the Graafsche Raam. The Graafsche Raam (also called Lage Raam) is a stream that drains the water from the Peelhourst. This functioned until 1942 as a drain to bring the water from the Beerse Overlaat back to the Maas. This explains why this small stream has such a wide stream valley. Until the Beerse Overlaat was finally closed, the stream valley was used as pasture and then also for agriculture.
For more than 25 years, work has been done on nature restoration in this stream valley: ponds have been dug and a large part of the grounds have been redesigned with alternating mixed forest, meadows, fields, thickets and reed beds. The Langven, which is a little further south, was created in the last ice age by sand drift. This sand can still be found in the form of shifting dunes to the east of the fen, because the prevailing wind direction was west. In the 1950s, it was largely closed in order to use it as agricultural land.
In 1996 the Langven was restored to its pre-1950 form and it is now very rich in various (also rare) plants and animals. Some of the plant seeds survived for a period of 50 years before resurfacing. You can find galigaan, corpus, swamp deer hay and sundew here. The deer, badger and fox have also discovered new habitat here.

The route
We leave at 09:00 from the parking lot behind Zaal Verploegen and try to drive with as few cars as possible. Of course, if you want, you can go to the location yourself...
The starting point is the parking lot at the tennis club at Karweg 2, 5364 NR Escaren.
We first walk to the bridge (north direction) to oversee the stream from the bridge. Then we go along the waterfront towards the South until a branch of the Raam. We follow the path along it to the Karweg, where we turn left.
[ There is probably a culvert running under the road. ]
A little further we turn right towards Hoogeweg, there we turn left. We take the next street/road/path on the left to return to the Karweg. At the end of that path turn right again towards the south.
We continue the route via the second path on the left and walk back towards the Raam. We follow it in a northerly direction, but leave the Raam at the third path to the left to get back to the Karweg. The next part is towards the starting point, but just before that we look to the right at the small lake. Then back to the cars and then (if applicable) to Wijchen.
