Visiting historic Bredevoort

This route takes you to Bredevoort in the Gelderse Achterhoek. In this sparsely populated region you can still experience the peace and hospitality of yesteryear when you cycle through the semi-open bocage landscape.

Scholten farms
You will find several authentic scholten farms around Winterswijk. The scholte was the Saxon version of the sheriff. For example, on the Meerdinkweg under Woold you pass through the former Meerdink scholten estate. Here you cycle through a centuries-old mosaic of old oak forest, fields, meadows, hedgerows and streams. The Meenkmolen, a flour mill from 1851, is located in the hamlet of Miste. At Huttenweg 2 you pass Huize Meenk from 1912.

Bredevoort Book City
Bredevoort enjoys national fame as a historic town. It is a picturesque town with a beautiful historic center that you can wander through. On the Markt you will see the late Gothic St. George's Church from 1316. Remnants of the former fortress can be seen in Bastion Welgemoed on which the Prince of Orange stands, a flour mill from 1870.
