This is not the shortest way to the center of Ghent, but it is the most pleasant for cycling. You leave at Aalst station and cycle along forgotten roads to'Gentse Steenweg\\\', which we avoid as much as possible. Oordegem is a very unpleasant stretch of the N9 with the worst'cycle path\\\' in the region, which we avoid by turning off at the traffic lights, driving towards the church and then to the left of the church in the corner you can take a path down. This is indicated in green on the map, but the route could not be indicated via this path for technical reasons. You will automatically reach the indicated route after a hundred meters or so. Then follow the N9 on the cycle path that is now passable and follow the arrows to cycle junction 72, 73, 74 (possibly 17 is also possible).
From Melle it goes along the Scheldt. There are two ways to do this: either you cross the Scheldt at the church of Melle and follow 12, or you briefly follow the N9 towards Ghent until you cross the bridge and then immediately take the descending cycle path to the right and follow the Scheldt on this side to the bridge of Heusden where you join the first, slightly longer alternative route.
From here it goes along quiet car-free streets to the bridge under the E 17 highway. There you turn left for a while and take the old Brusselse Steenweg to the end where you have to turn right to then take the bicycle bridge on the left and arrive in the park immediately right across another bicycle bridge at the Visserij.
You follow the bicycle street to the swimming pool Van Eyck and you are on the Reep and in the center of Ghent.
