Westerveld, Drenthe, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 3720696

Imagine yourself far from civilization among the rolling heathlands, more than sixty ponds and fens, drifting sandy soils and forests in the largest wet heathland area in Western Europe.
Oldengaerde
About 8 kilometers after the start of your route you can have tea or coffee at The Teaspoon, with the cozy Tea Garden. A little further on you will pass the former manor of Oldengaerde. The first mention of the estate dates from 1420. In 1717 the manor was extensively renovated with a new facade. The second house was also built around this time. There is a beautiful garden around the houses, which was designed after the garden of Versailles.
Sheepfold
The Sheepfold of Ruinen is located in Benderse, on the edge of the Benderse Heide. Since 1949, the cage here has provided shelter for Drenthe heath sheep, a breed recognizable by its multi-colored wool, long tail and horns. In the morning and evening you will see more than three hundred sheep strolling to and from the heath. Close by you will find the Dwingelderveld Visitor Center, with more information about the Benderse heath. The last attraction of the cycle tour is Pasmans Huus Museum Farm.
