Walking across Brabant estates

Just below Tilburg you can enjoy a lovely walk in the border area with Belgium. This walking route takes you through the silent forests on the Kempen estates of Nieuwkerk and Gorp & Roovert. On the cozy terrace at Natuurpoort De Roovertsche Leij you can experience typical Burgundian hospitality.

Nieuwkerk estate
Nieuwkerk is partly located in the Netherlands, partly in Belgium. The hamlet owes its name to the border church that was built here in 1652. Catholics from Tilburg could go to this church to practice their faith. The estate was created in the nineteenth century through the actions of Baron De Meester de Betzenbroek. His descendants still partly own the estate. Walking through the woods you occasionally have beautiful views over the meadows.

Roovertsche Leij
After a while you walk onto the Gorp en Roovert estate. The forests here become denser and darker. You walk between beech and oak trees, a little later between conifers. At junction 2 you cross the Roovertsche Leij, the stream that meanders through this nature reserve. The stone bridge contains a reference to the execution of 5 resistance heroes by the Germans during the Second World War. In Gorp you will see a beautiful monumental hunting lodge from 1870.
