Dear walkers, we are going to walk through the Wijchense district of Valendries .'Vale\\\' stands for poor, bare and gray (ground) and'dries\\\' means high-altitude. Only asparagus grew on the high sand and Wijchen was famous for that at the beginning of the last century.
The Valendries district is a special district and was the first major expansion plan in Wijchen. It is remarkable that during the construction in 1950, the rural character of Wijchen was already taken into account. The district was set up based on the garden village idea. The garden village of Vreewijk (1918) in Rotterdam served as an example. De Valendries therefore does not have closed street walls, but a mixture of single houses, double houses and blocks of three or four houses under one roof. Also many open spaces and greenery.
A unique neighborhood to walk through with the above in mind. I know that Talis is one of the major landlords there and has recently renovated a large number of houses. But that aside... It is a challenge to understand the character of the neighborhood and to capture it with our cameras.
But after all that stone ( although the neighborhood does have a lot of green! ) we head for the countryside . It is completely different from the Valendries themselves, the only link may be the Blije Dries (also high up...). De Blije Dries is a unique (children's) playground. A little past the entrance there is even a plane....!
Here too, the challenge is to visualize the character of this area! A lot of maize is now being grown, so the views may be different than in other seasons.
The last part we walk on an unpaved road: the Waszinkweg . Many people used to have a vegetable garden there. Then turn right along the Oosterweg to cross about 100 meters further to a completely different district of Wijchen: Wijchen Zuid. At the roundabout we walk out of this district again to go along the Zuiderdreef in the direction of't Mozaïek.
