Description
The Lauwersmeer National Park is especially recommended for bird lovers. In this wetland area full of islands and grassland on the border of Groningen and Friesland you will find more than 100 bird species and tens of thousands of geese that use this area as a place to spend the winter. Get on your bike and go bird watching on the edge of the Lauwersmeer with this route.
The creation of the Lauwersmeer
About half of this route takes you through National Park Lauwersmeer. The lake used to be connected to the Lauwerszee, but after the flood disaster of 1953 it was decided to close the lake with a dike. As a result, the area around the current lake was no longer constantly threatened by high water. After the closure, high parts of the seabed dried up. The beautiful flora that can be found today originated on those bottoms and some parts of the seabed were used as agricultural areas.
Flora and Fauna in the National Park
In the spring and autumn it is a big bird festival in National Park Lauwersmeer. You can just see tens of thousands of geese flying over, but you will also find special birds here. How about, for example, stilts, spoonbills, gray phalarlegs or the white-tailed eagle? In addition to all kinds of birds, foxes, Scottish Highlanders and Konik horses also live here. In terms of flora, the enormous amounts of flowering orchids are especially beautiful to see.
