De Ronde Venen, Utrecht, The Netherlands
Hiking route: 360726
Provided by: Schoonenberg
A large pool, rustling reed beds and wet grasslands: that is De Groene Jonker. A relatively young nature reserve that is still developing. In every season you can admire special meadow and marsh birds here, such as black-winged stilts, eared grebes, lapwings and black terns. The spoonbill also likes to eat here. You can see them wading through the water in spring and summer, sometimes from very close by. Be sure to bring your binoculars! Walking along the dike you can be amazed by the peace in this region. You can also enjoy the beautiful high Dutch skies in which the clouds drift by. De Hoef is a pleasant village where the monumental Pondskoekersluis from the second half of the nineteenth century is located. In the village you can admire the Antonius van Padua, a church from 1921.
